The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman made a special appearance on tonight’s recap series Talking Dead, clearing the air with about Daryl Dixon’s much discussed sexuality. And not only that, Kirkman teased a new character who we’ll be introduced to in the second half of Season 5. Is Daryl gay or straight? (Who cares really?) Who will we meet in Season 5?
Earlier this year, there was much chatter on the Interwebs about Daryl Dixon’s (played by Norman Reedus) character’s sexuality. This discussion began after Kirkman answered a fan question in one of the The Walking Dead comic’s issues. He left the topic open for interpretation and started a forest fire of buzz. Tonight on Talking Dead, Kirkman set the record straight that although the writer’s room keeps the character fairly asexual on the show, he is, in fact straight as the arrows he uses in his crossbow.
“I do have to clear something up though. In The Walking Dead Letter’s Column in the old comic book that I do, there was a question that made me mention that there was a possibility early on about making Daryl Dixon’s character gay, and it caused quite a hubbub online. And you know, I just wanted to make it clear that I was saying that the possibility was there; and I would have been fine with it, the network would have been fine with it, but we ultimately didn’t do that. And I can make it official, Daryl Dixon is actually straight. But coming back in our next half of the season, we are introducing a very prominent gay character from the comics that is debuting. Be on the look out for that, and that’s going to be pretty cool.”
And that’s that.
But for those championing for a gay character on the show, Kirkman made mention that there will be a gay character joining the group very soon this season, of which comic fans will know from the books.
The Walking Dead Season 5 part two returns February 8, 2015.
Keep reading if you want to know more about the new character and minor details about future plot points, otherwise stop reading.
Robert Kirkman, we can assume, speaks of Aaron, the recruiter from Alexandria Safe-Zone community. Led by Douglas, a former Democratic U.S. Congressman for the state of Ohio, the Alexandria Safe-Zone is a peaceful, thriving community much like Woodbury sans tyrannical leader.
I really dig what the show is doing to lead us to this moment. Based on the teaser after the mid-season finale, Michonne is questioning Rick’s leadership and their ability to continue to survive in the wilderness. Enter the Alexandria Safe-Zone where they can ease their worries. I’m sure there will be a lot of debate amongst the group about Aaron and the new community, but I know for a fact being a reader of the books that the show will continue its path towards great content.
Since Kirkman only left bread crumbs about one gay character we can assume that only Aaron is introduced and not Eric, his boyfriend. Or he wanted to only tease the idea and didn’t want to giveaway too much too soon. It will be interesting to see who they will cast moving forward as there will be a lot of new faces to meet moving forward.
Here is the official plot synopsis for Season 5 of The Walking Dead, courtesy of AMC:
Season 5 picks up shortly thereafter. What follows is a story that weaves the true motives of the people of Terminus with the hopeful prospect of a cure in Washington, D.C., the fate of the group’s lost comrades, as well as new locales, new conflicts, and new obstacles in keeping the group together and staying alive.
Stories will break apart and intersect. The characters will find love and hate. Peace and conflict. Contentment and terror. And, in the quest to find a permanent, safe place to call home, one question will haunt them:
After all they’ve seen, all they’ve done, all they’ve sacrificed, lost, and held on to no matter what the cost…
Who do they become?
Developed by Frank Durabont, The Walking Dead is produced by Greg Nicotero, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, and David Alpert. The show stars Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yeun, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Melissa McBride, Danai Gurira, Chandler Riggs, and many more.
